Selling gallium: compare the assay, the buyer specification and the net return
A gallium price is meaningful only when the buyer knows what material is being offered. Purity, impurity limits, quantity, physical form, location and settlement terms can all change the value of an offer. A small retail package and a commercial lot should not be compared as though they share the same market and costs.
For a holder of gallium metal, the useful first decision is often whether to sell the material as it stands or request a refining proposal. That decision needs two comparable written offers, not an assumed premium for an extra purity grade.
Put the assay ahead of the shorthand
The familiar “N” notation is a shorthand for nominal purity. On a simple mass-fraction basis:
| Grade | Nominal purity | Remaining fraction in parts per million |
|---|---|---|
| 4N | 99.99% | 100 ppm |
| 5N | 99.999% | 10 ppm |
| 6N | 99.9999% | 1 ppm |
These are arithmetic equivalents, not a substitute for a purchase specification. A reported 99.9985% corresponds to a remaining fraction of 15 ppm if the percentage represents the relevant total mass fraction. It should not be rounded up and presented as 5N.
Ask which impurities were tested, the analytical methods, detection limits, sampling procedure and whether the result applies to the exact lot being offered. A buyer may reject material because a particular contaminant exceeds its limit even when the headline percentage looks attractive.
Indium Corporation describes gallium products across 4N to 6N grades and states that it refines gallium and reclaims it from industrial scrap. That confirms a relevant commercial processing category; it does not establish acceptance, price or available capacity for an individual lot. Prepare a lot dossier buyers can evaluate
Before requesting a price, assemble:
- Net quantity, physical form and packaging description.
- The assay report, laboratory identity, report date and sample-to-lot connection.
- Impurity results and any stated exclusions or analytical limitations.
- Ownership or authority-to-sell evidence suitable for the transaction.
- Current location, inspection or sampling access and shipment constraints.
- Requested sale basis, currency, payment timing and quote-validity period.
Use the exact assay in the offer. Avoid unsupported descriptions such as “semiconductor ready” unless the intended buyer has confirmed that its full specification is met.
Request an as-is offer and a refining proposal
An as-is offer should identify the payable quantity, agreed assay, deductions, delivery basis and settlement timing. A toll-refining proposal should identify the target specification, recovery assumptions, fees, minimum batch, turnaround and the treatment of residues or rejected material.
Indium's reclaim program describes an assessment and quotation process followed by processing and settlement, which may involve returning recovered material or purchasing it as agreed. Treat that as a useful example of the questions a transaction must resolve, rather than a standing toll-refining offer for your metal. Indium metals-recycling process, reviewed October 1, 2026.
Confirm who owns the material during processing and how a disagreement over incoming or outgoing assay will be handled. An independent sample and a clearly defined dispute process can matter as much as the quoted refining charge.
Compare net proceeds, not headline grades
Build both alternatives on the same starting quantity and delivery basis:
As-is net proceeds = accepted payable quantity × agreed purchase price − seller-paid transaction costs.
Upgrade net proceeds = accepted recovered quantity × committed output purchase price − refining, assay, freight, insurance and other seller-paid costs.
For illustration only, an as-is offer of $100,000 with $2,000 of costs nets $98,000. An upgraded output sale of $125,000 with $20,000 of refining and other costs nets $105,000. The apparent improvement is $7,000 before any financing cost, delay or downside not included in those assumptions. These numbers are not gallium market quotes.
The upgrade comparison is incomplete if the output price is only a hope. Seek a buyer specification and an executable purchase arrangement before committing capital to refining. Ask how lower recovery, a failed specification or a delayed settlement changes the outcome.
FAQ
Does a higher purity always produce a better return?
No. The achievable selling price must cover yield losses, processing and transaction costs. A buyer for the higher grade must also exist on acceptable terms.
Can a 99.9985% assay be called 5N?
It should not be rounded up to 99.999%. State the exact result and the assay basis, then let the buyer assess it against its specification.
Can a refiner's public website confirm that it will buy my lot?
No. Public capability information is a starting point for qualification. Acceptance and commercial terms require a lot-specific response.
What information makes a first inquiry useful?
Lead with quantity, exact assay, form, location and the requested transaction: as-is purchase, toll refining or both. Discuss a procurement or disposition brief with Arch Point Resources.
